DRAWINGS OF LANDMARKS

Inspiration for drawing

Inspiration from a trip to see British artist Anthony Gormley's permanent sculpture installation; Another Place at Crosby beach near Liverpool. It consists of 100 cast iron figures facing towards the sea. The figures are modelled on the artist's own naked body.

As time passes and they are subject to the elements and the ever changing tide, the figures are weathering, changing colour and even growing barnacles!

The Yorkshire Hills

Stoodley Pike is a monument situated on top of the the Pennine hills above the town of Todmorden. Inscribed above the entrance reads: Beacon Monument erected by public subscription commenced in 1814 to commemorate the surrender of Paris to the Allies and finished after the Battle of Waterloo when peace was established in 1815. By strange coincidence The Pike fell on the day the  Russian ambassador left London before the declaration of war with Russia in 1854. It was rebuilt when peace was restored in 1856. Restored and lightning conductor fixed 1889.

The Angel of the North

One of the iconic structures in England. Anthony Gormley's 1998 imposing steel sculpture.  20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across. Situated in Gateshead, North East. Gormley stated the significance of the Angel was three-fold: firstly, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries; secondly, to grasp the transition from an industrial to an information age; and thirdly, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears.
